Origin of Olympics and its significance?

The 2024 Olympic games started in Paris, France with a grand opening ceremony. France has now hosted six Olympics: three Summer Games (1900, 1924, 2024) and three Winter Games (1924, 1968, 1992). Lets know of what is the origin of Olympics and its significance.

What is the origin of the Olympic Games?

The Games have a long history dating back approximately 3,000 years to the Peloponnese region in Ancient Greece. Sporting events were organized in Olympia every four years and were known as the Olympic Games.

The exact origins of the Games remain uncertain, although written sources often mention the year 776 BC as a significant date. The merging of history and mythology has made it difficult to pinpoint the exact reasons for the Games' inception.

During the Ancient Games, the four-year gap between editions was referred to as an "Olympiad" and served as a method of timekeeping. Instead of using years, people counted time in Olympiads.

In 1894, Pierre de Coubertin proposed the idea of reviving the Olympic Games. The first modern Games took place in Athens in 1896, marking the beginning of a new era for the Olympics.

The Games help to keep a people-to-people communication channel open between people from different nations and separate from politics. - It is the International Olympic Committee (IOC's) mission to unite the world in peaceful competition and foster an atmosphere of peace, development, resilience, tolerance and understanding.

What is the role of International Olympic Committee (IOC)?

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was established on 23 June 1894, shortly before the inaugural modern Olympic Games in April 1896. It serves as the highest authority of the Olympic Movement, fostering collaboration among all stakeholders, including National Olympic Committees, International Federations, athletes, Organising Committees for the Olympic Games, Worldwide Olympic Partners, broadcast partners, and United Nations (UN) agencies. Through various initiatives, the IOC ensures the successful organization of the Olympic Games, provides support to affiliated member organizations, and actively promotes the Olympic values.

From India, Nita Mukesh Ambani (wife of Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani) is the member of IOC.
